"We must make people everywhere understand that the AIDS crisis is not over; that this is not about a few foreign countries, far away. This is a threat to an entire generation, that it is a threat to an entire civilization..."

- United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan
On 15 May 2005, thousands of individuals in more than 4,500 communities in 93 countries participated in the world's largest and oldest annual grassroots HIV/AIDS event.

The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial is designed to honor the memory of those lost to HIV/AIDS, show support for those living with HIV/AIDS, raise awareness of HIV/AIDS, and mobilize community involvement in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

This powerful event is an ideal way to begin talking about HIV/AIDS in your community. If you are interested in coordinating a Candlelight Memorial, please fill out the registration form by clicking here. Once registration is confirmed, you will be listed on our 2006 List of Coordinators.

2005 Theme
Turning Remembrance into Action

This year, we selected a two-year theme that focuses on remembering those who have been touched by HIV/AIDS and keeping these memories alive through collective action.

The goal of this year's theme was to encourage communities to incorporate advocacy activities that extend beyond the official candlelight event. It is an opportunity to discuss the impact of HIV/AIDS within the community as well as how each community will address issues including prevention, care, treatment, stigma and education of the disease. This two-year commitment serves to strengthen ties within the community and empower individuals to take action toward shifting the image of HIV/AIDS.

All registered coordinators received multiple copies of the year's poster in the Coordinator's Kit. If you have not signed up as a coordinator for 2006, please fill out the registration form by clicking here.
